Artist's Statement

Through the medium of paint I deal with the history of urban change, referencing the legacy of de-industrialisation and its effect on the socio-cultural psyche of post-modern Britain. Consequently, there is a sense of loss within the paintings; a negativity that exists through the lack of nostalgia. In dealing with issues surrounding memory, the paintings also reference the fate of historical amnesia on society and play upon the realisation that humanity should never forget that which has gone before. Through utilising paint in a rather loose manner I can play upon the more surreal elements inherent within my work
and subsequently, through this method of working, the paintings almost become industrial wastelands; the figures become the only living entities condemned and locked in this post industrial space. The bleak landscapes the viewer observes are vast swathes of land broken up by great hulks of industrial matter and it is through this approach that the paintings are able to connect realism, in a documentary-style manner with a more symbolist element. Additionally, in using this traditional medium in an emotive manner I wish to forward the belief that art may still reflect morality.
